All Aboard the Lettuce Line!
We were thrilled to welcome guests to our very first Friends of Becconsall event on 31st March 2025. Held at the Hesketh Bank Community Centre, our evening talk was titled “The Lettuce Line: the West Lancashire and Liverpool, Southport & Preston Junction Railways 1878–1964” and led by local railway enthusiast and historian, Keith Hick.
Keith took us on a fascinating journey through time, sharing not just his deep knowledge of the railway lines that once criss-crossed our part of Lancashire, but also personal stories and photographs that really brought the tracks back to life. His mix of historical detail and lived experience gave guests a unique insight into a key piece of local heritage — from the passengers and freight that once rolled through the region, to the closure of these lines and their lasting legacy.
The event was well attended and warmly received, with Friends staying afterwards to chat, share memories, and reflect on just how much the local landscape has changed. We’re incredibly grateful to Keith for giving his time and expertise so generously, and to everyone who joined us for making our first Friends of Becconsall event such a success.
This is just the beginning for the Friends of Becconsall. If you’re interested in supporting the park and taking part in future talks, events and activities, find out more about becoming a Friend at becconsall.org/friends.
